You can copy the layout, you cannot copy the fuel

Note 1 of 12
  • #design
  • #positioning
  • #rebuild

Two reference sites, same visual language, different engine. One runs on proof of person, this one runs on proof of archive.

Two sites went into the reference pile for this rebuild. One of them nearly cost me the hero.

The first is a design reference and nothing else: near-black background, one hot accent used boldly, pure neutral greys, soft pill shapes, a dot grid, a glow bleeding in from the edges. All of that is portable. It is a visual system with no argument attached, and it works here.

The second was the dangerous one, because it looks like the same visual language and it is not doing the same job. Cyan gradient on the headline, blue black background, a stat bar under the hero. I wanted the stat bar.

Then I looked at what fills it. That site runs on proof of person. A face, a subscriber count in the hundreds of thousands, a community with a number attached, stage photos, dozens of images of a real human doing real things in front of real audiences. The stat bar is the payoff of assets that exist.

I have none of those numbers. If I copy the frame, the stat bar gets filled with either invented figures or weak ones, and the hero reads as a template with the content missing. Which is worse than not having a stat bar.

What I do have is the archive. Years of guides, tools that run in production, notes with dates on them. That is a different fuel and it wants a different hero: put the body of work in front, not a claim about the person.

So the counts under the hero are counts of things, and they come out of the content collection at build time rather than being typed in. Notes, guides, artifacts. If the number is small, the number is small, and that is honest rather than embarrassing. It also gives the number somewhere to go. A subscriber count I do not have cannot grow. A note count can, and every time I publish it moves on its own.

The other thing this settled: no stock photography, no illustration, no hero graphic. The proof is the list.

Same visual language. Different engine. The mistake would have been taking the shape and hoping the assets showed up later.
